St. Ann, Bensonton, York Castle

Project Description:

Location/Communities Affected:
       York Castle, St. Ann
The Water Supply System supplies water to South Eastern St. Ann, primarily in the
                community of York Castle.

Background and Purpose:
York Castle houses a facility that had a catchment area and perimeter fencing that was in a state of disrepair as well as a storage tank that had leakages. The leakages reduced the available water supply available to the York Castle residents and the lack of perimeter fencing allowed the reduced water supply to be contaminated by external forces. Some of these forces include animals, animal excrements and humans. These forces rendered the water unsafe for human consumption and as a result, the Government of Jamaica made the decision to make the necessary repairs to the facility so that the residents can have a reliable and adequate source of potable (drinkable) water.

Projected Outputs:
The outputs of the project were:
  •          The waterproofing of the storage tank.
  •          The repairing of the defective areas of the tank.
  •          The installation of a 1.524m high chain link fencing.
  •          The repairing of the catchment area.
  •          The excavating of a soak-away pit, 1.2m wide and 1.2m deep.
  •          The installation of a 50mm drain pipe from the pipe house to the soak away pit.
  •          The whitewashing, bushing and other miscellaneous works of the facility.

The St. Ann Parish Council is responsible for operating and maintaining the facility.
